Most places have omitted the 2nd Dark Star after MAMU but mainly I'm wondering about the song placement in the 2nd set.

Deadbase has them starting off with He's Gone but Deadlists have the first song being Dark Star.

Anyone know the TRUTH?

Well yes, disk 3 would be the one to listen to and I would imagine it's mostly the DS suite and possible the Wharfrat. The segue into Wharfrat is spectacular. You really think they are going into the 2nd verse of DS but they pull the ole switcheroo on us.

This might be one case where deadlists is in error - I think He's Gone is the correct starting point for set 2. Check the notes here - since they used an AUD as a source, it's likely to have the correct breaks.

That's what I figured, LiA, thanks for corroborating that.

What's really odd about this is the third set for no apparent reason. Do we know why they didn't end the show on Sugar Mag and promised to come back for another 15 or 20 min PLUS an encore?

Hmm, now I'm confused!

A poster on setlists.net makes this claim:
"Sets 2 and 3 are actually as follows:

Set 2:
Dark Star
Me And My Uncle
Dark Star
Wharf Rat
Sugar Magnolia

Set 3:
He's Gone
It Hurts Me Too
El Paso
Not Fade Away
Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad
Not Fade Away"

That is an extremely odd set arrangement, not only to have Dark Star start a set (practically unheard-of in '72), but to have such a short set. If this is the case, I don't know the reason.
However, they did do it a couple other times that year I can recall - on 7/18/72 and 9/3/72, you think the show's over, but then they come out a third time for a few MORE songs....

For the most surprising 1972 third-set, 4-17-72 is the place to go! Can't complain much about a Dark Star>Sugar Mag>Caution third set....

Yes, I just finished listening to 4/17 about 20 times because of the 3rd set. (which was actually what I listened to).

As for 4/24, the poster's claim makes more sense to me. Maybe after the DS monster they thought they were further along in the show and ended it prematurely. Coming back with a more substantial set list makes more sense.
